TDK-Lambda HWS80A-12/A: Understanding This 12V Industrial Power Supply
Share
Industrial power supplies are not usually the most expensive components inside a control panel, but they are often among the most important.
The unit shown here is a TDK-Lambda HWS80A-12/A AC-DC power supply. According to its product label, it provides a 12V DC output at up to 6.7A. That works out to a maximum rated output of approximately 80.4W.
What does the model number tell us?
The main identification is:
TDK-Lambda HWS80A-12/A
In this model designation, “12” refers to the nominal 12V DC output. The “/A” version is supplied with a protective metal cover.
The label on this unit shows a 100–240V AC, 50–60Hz input rating. TDK-Lambda’s published specifications list a wider operating input range of 85–265V AC. For equipment selection and installation, the current manufacturer documentation should always be checked rather than relying only on a photograph or a familiar-looking model number.
Where is a 12V industrial power supply used?
A power supply in this class may be used to provide DC power for components such as:
-
Sensors and transmitters
-
Relays and interface modules
-
Small controllers
-
Indicators and alarm devices
-
Communication equipment
-
Other 12V control-circuit loads
The required voltage is only the beginning of the selection process. Available current, startup demand, ambient temperature, ventilation, mounting position and the total load connected to the supply all matter.
Why does the current rating matter?
A 12V device does not automatically make every 12V power supply suitable.
The power supply must be able to provide enough current for all connected loads, including any startup or temporary current demand. Operating continuously at the absolute maximum rating may also leave little allowance for future additions, temperature derating or changing operating conditions.
The HWS80A-12/A is rated for up to 6.7A, but the usable capacity in a particular installation depends on the manufacturer’s mounting and temperature guidance.
What is the V.ADJ control?
The small adjustment control visible near the terminal block allows the output voltage to be fine-tuned. TDK-Lambda specifies an adjustment range of 9.6 to 14.4V for this model.
That control should not be adjusted casually. The output should be measured with appropriate equipment, and every connected device must be able to tolerate the resulting voltage.
A practical replacement reminder
When replacing an industrial power supply, check more than the headline voltage:
-
Complete manufacturer and model number
-
AC input requirements
-
DC output voltage and available current
-
Terminal arrangement and polarity
-
Physical dimensions and mounting method
-
Ventilation and operating temperature
-
Required approvals for the application
-
Current manufacturer instructions
A visually similar power supply is not necessarily a direct substitute.
